Just to let everyone know, the 3 isn't retired. There are no retired numbers in NASCAR.
But no I don't think Jr. should drive the 3 car. If he does though, it won't be until late in his career, he has said that himself.

I think things in Dale's life are coming to a point of change. He's at a crossroads and he is going to have to pick a new direction soon. He knows that, his fans and the media are even speculating about it. His contract with Bud is up at the end of this year. His stepmother is running DEI into the ground, well maybe not because even Junior says she's a good business woman. But at any rate, I think the number 3 car would be cool for him. I sure as hell wouldn't want anyone else driving it.

I'm a Dale Jr fan and I hope that he never drives the #3! So many people want for him to drive his fathers car but they need to realize that there will never be another Dale Earnhardt Sr! Junior himself has said over and over and over that he is not his father and that he does not want to be his father.
Junior is his own person and is building his own legacy in Nascar. If he drives the #3 then it will ruin him. If he drives the #3 then that will give the Nascar fans who don't like him even more reason to dislike him.
IMO, it's time to retire #3 and that paint scheme.

They did not retire the 3, NASCAR doesn't allow the retiring of numbers. RCR owns the 3 and has said the only way it would ever be on the track again is if an Earnhardt is driving it. If Jr left DEI, they would get to keep the 8. He has said one day, after he wins a championship, he would like to drive it.

This has probably been said but the number 3 IS NOT RETIRED!!! Richard Childress owns the number and the rights to it... Like I said if that has been said, I am sorry, but I cant read all of this mubo jumbo that some of your so called "nascar fans" (you know who you are) write.
I would love to see Jr go to RCR and blow the doors off of DEI. I am a Gordon fan (Insult here), and I dont care much for Jr but I have a lot of respect for him. I am a huge nascar fan, and I love the history of the sport as well... Nothing would bring water to my eyes faster than seeing Jr driving that number 3 for his father, and the man who gave his father the chance.

Richard Childress raced the three car when he was an active driver and the number was registered to him. Dale Sr raced the number eight, as did his father Ralph. Dale Sr raced the three car when he signed on with Childress. Dale Sr may have become famous when he drove the three car, but the Earnhardts will always be remembered by some as drivers of the eight car.

First of all, as someone stated, #3 is NOT retired, you can't retire a number in NASCAR, for obvious reasons. And, there are certain rules on keeping a number with a certain team, they have certain limitations they have to meet to keep it on that team, otherwise it will be given up for grabs. However, if you simply "attempt" to qualify it in a race, whether it makes it or not, do that once a year and that team keeps the number.
As far as Jr driving it, he's the only person I would ever want to see in it, however, I don't think he would want that, I think he would want his own number. Childress has said he has a ride if he wants it, anytime, but I don't think he'll want the #3.

No noone should ever drive the #3 car especially not Jr. He needs to make his own way. He cant say he wants to be his own man and then drive his dad's car. Cant have it both ways. Besides I think Dale Sr fans will be furious if anyone else ever drives that car.

What nascar needs to do is start to retire some numbers, for example #3, drivers can have 3 digit numbers if they have to, I hope that JR stays with the #8

I think the time is now passed for that to happen. When nascar had the tribute to past drivers,it should have been Junior making the tribute laps in the 3 car not Richard Childress. The fans would have loved it and it could have been put behind him and maybe people would have let it be.
