While the syndrome is not curable there are many medications that will help manage the symptoms:

Crampy abdominal pain - Bentyl or Levsin
Diarrhea predominant - Loperamide, Alosetron
Constipation predominant - Tegaserod (AKA Zelnorm)

Use of newer agents such as alosetron (Lotronex) and tegaserod (Zelnorm) should be limited to patients with more severe disease because of adverse effects, high cost, and limited efficacy.

I was diagnosed with this about 10 years ago and have not taken one prescription. The only time I suffer from pains and other symptoms now is when I consistently eat foods low in fiber and/or lots of caffeine. My doctor prescribed staying off all caffeine and fried foods. Then he said to make sure to eat at least 25 grams of fiber a day. It has worked like a charm!
