Help! She's a Cavalier. I feed her a 1/4 cup dry food in AM, and 3/4 cup with about 1-2 Tablespoon of can food (for flavor. She's not crazy about the dry stuff) in the evening. She acts like she's starving to death, and will eat anything. She's gained, instead of losing!! I walk her every day for about 1/2 -1 mile. I feed her weight control Kibble & Bits. HELP1

When you say your "pup", is she really a puppy, or is that just how you refer to her? At any rate, you need to talk to your vet some more and see what s/he says as to how much food your dog should be getting. You may need to switch to Hill's Prescription Diet r/d, feed her a quarter cup less, or walk her 2x a day; or you may have to do all of this. Also ask your vet to check your dog's thyroid. An underactive thyroid can make a dog gain weight no matter what you try. In that case, she is going to have to take a thyroid pill every day.

Good luck, I know just what you are going through.

First, Kibble&Bits is a cheap, low quality dog food. Switch to a high quality food. Any good pet store can tell you the difference. Then quit feeding the cat food. You can add green beans which adds flavor and fiber which will help fill her up. Some things about dogs. Some breeds will eat as much as you give them. It is up to you to resist. When she begs for food play with her instead for a minute or two. This will distract her from the food, get your attention (which she really wants) and give her a little exercise. Or play a game which involves food. If you have a hallway or indoor stairs, go to one end of the hallway or the top of the stairs. Call her to you and when she comes give her a piece of her dog food. Then make sure she sees you throw another piece either down the stairs or down the hall. Tell her to go get it and when she eats it praise her and call her back, giving her another piece of food. Use some of what you would normally put in her bowl. About the cat food: Humans and dogs both will choose a favorite treat food (like cake or cat food) over healthy (think broccoli or dry dog food) any day. But is isn't healthy to give your dog "cake" every day. So think of the cat food as a rare treat not a daily indulgence. You might try adding a little water or unsalted chix broth. Water is best. I think if you try these things the weight will come off and you will both be happier. Good luck

Kibble and Bits is a horrible food and probably the root of your entire problem. It is a high fat food that is extra tasty, true, but it packs the weight on. Particularly if she is a puppy - under a year -, she needs to be on a puppy food. She acts like she is starving because, well, she is probably not getting the nutrients she needs. I recommend Eukanuba puppy food (no I don't work for them) because it a high quality food at a reasonable price. You shouldn't have to reduce her food "amount" either. Just keep her on the normal recommended serving (on bag for size and age) The Eukanuba website has lots of helpful information by breed, age and activity levels.

However, she should get at least a 2 mile walk a day and maybe some "run around in the yard" time afterwards too. Throwing the ball or 15 - 30 min (depending on her attention span! LOL!) learning her tricks is also good exercise, too, and enforces good habits for you both.

First off your are feeding a very low quality dog food.
Get something that is much higher quality and maybe the dog will like it better.
Also measure out the dry food and put it down for 20 minutes and pick up anything she does not eat.
Stop the canned food. Give just they dry when she is good and hungry she will eat it with no problems.
Stop feeding anything other than the dry food. For treats go with a green bean or a piece of carrot. They are low cal and good for dogs.
If you stop feeding everything else and feed a smaller amount of a high wuality diet your pet will loose weight.
It is a formual that has worked on every dog that has a owner who is willing to follow the program.

First of all, how old is the dog? That has a lot to do with it. Second of all, unlike someone below said, Hills Science Diet is the best. I work at a vet clinic. I have been to seminars on it. I have seen the research. Ask your vet about Hills Science Diet R/d. It is formulated to help dogs lose weight. Check out their website. Every year they have a weight loss competition using on this food (it comes in both dry and canned, use both if flavor is an issue) We had a 65 pound jack russel on this diet and he lost 20 pounds in a month. It may cost more, but it is worth it. Research it for yourself if you want.

Walk her more! And try and feed her small amounts through out the day. For example feed her 4 times a day 1/4 cup. Stop giving her the wet food. Its not good on their teeth.

You are feeding her a very crappy food. That food is full of carbohydrates & sugars along with dues and chemical preservatives.

You need to feed a good quality food, one with no corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp in it. It takes up to 3 times as much of a crappy low quality food for a dog to receive proepr nutrition then it does a good quality meat based food.

Look for a good food such as Wellness, Innova, Chicken Soup For The Dog Lover's Soul, Solid Gold, Blue Buffalo, Timberwolf, California Natural..

Stay AWAY from foods such as Science Diet, IAMS/Eukanuba, Purina Dog Chow, Pedigree and other "supermarket" foods.

I have a yorkie and had the same problem. Turns out my do has an underactive thyroid. Even though we were walking her and we were not over feeding her, she still continued to gain wieght, so maybe your dog is having the same problem. The only way to tell is to have your doctor do a blood test for it.

Hope that helps!

to be honest, kibble n bits is about the worst food that you can get. what did the vet recommend? buy a better brand of diet food, and feed her a reduced amount of food. plenty of exercise and water, and she should be fine. don't give into her begging. 2 lbs is not too much to lose.
