Why do people who are otherwise morally upright seem to think there's nothing wrong with illegally copying an artist's music? Do they just not realize what they are doing? Or do they think it's ok to steal from the rich? Or what?

I know it's legal and perfectly moral to copy yourself a backup copy. I'm talking about ILLEGAL uses of copying. There is a reason for those laws.

I don't care if the artist only gets 1 penny from my buying his CD. That's still 1 penny that belongs to him, and should not be stolen.

Do you actually think that bands get a lot of their money from CDs? You have to be joking, dumb, or high. Bands really only get pennies if they are lucky for each CD they make. Where does the rest of that money go?
Bands get most of their money through concerts, not CD's. The RIAA is turning people into crimeless criminals.

Is downloading service packs and Windows patches for your computer considered stealing? It doesn't cost anything but by your logic it is theft. Maybe you should try to make it illegal to download those because it's "stealing."

I think it is just a little hard to draw a line with digital media. Since Tv shows are free to download, and making copies of your own music is fine, and there is so much video content on youtube, it kinda gets blurry. Plus you say "stealing" but really, it isn't. If I make a copy of a green day cd. It is fine. But if I let someone else listen to it, then all of a sudden I am breaking the law. My friend didn't steal anything and neither did I, but according to a copyright law, I did. What about if I video tape a britney spears music video on mtv, and listen to it a bunch. Did I do something illegal? I don't know. That's why it is so hard, it isn't as cut and dry as you might think.

Well, it could be that it's so common that it seems quite minor. People are so casual about it that it doesn't even seem like a crime anymore. Not many people think much of it when they steal music since they don't realize how serious it is. Going around school I notice how ignorant everybody is about it.

"We're not going to get caught, it's only a song!"

That's all I hear all day. I guess I can't judge the ignorant. Despite the fact artists don't get their profits mainly from CD's it's still stealing.

Money is money no matter how little.
Stealing is stealing no matter how minor.

Maybe it's a commentary on the ridiculous amounts of money entertainers make compared with much more important members of society such as teachers.

Does anyone need to be profiting off of Beethoven for his music to inspire and enthrall?

And to those claiming 'stealing is stealing', you need to stop looking at the world in such black and white. There are shades of gray. What about someone stealing food so they can survive that day? Is that still wrong of them, even if they need the food to live?

And if you concede that, how is it much different than stealing from someone who can afford to lose it? The RIAA and the poor musicians of today are rich enough already.

I believe it is wrong, and people do what suits them. The people and the company worke hard to make the music, if you like the music so much, you should be willing to pay for it to support them so they can make more. I have not, and will not copy/download illegal music. I also know someone who threw everything they copied from limewire away because they realized it was wrong and felt bad.

I think that people realize it but they don't care. They have the same attitude when taking entire articles from websites and copying and pasting them elsewhere without permission, usually without even referencing who originally wrote the piece. People know it's not right morally and legally, but they simply don't care about the rights of others.
