Maybe when the saying first evolved, but that isn't necessarily the case nowadays.

In the days of Cavemen the man had the muscles necessary to go out and kill animals for food. The female stayed at the cave and had babies and watched the kids as they did not have the strength the males had to out and hunt. When the males returned with the kill the females would then cook the meat and make clothes from the skins. As time passed and the world was mostly ran by males the term, "bread winner" was used to show the "he" went out into the world and brought home the money to feed and shelter the family. Then one day the female received the "right to vote" and the world changed! If you have not noticed the female is taking over the world we know today. The only thing the male used to hold on to was "he" could only "make babies". But that too has changed and is no longer true. The male no longer has a term that "he" can use today to show that "he" is the owner of that term.
"What man has done is what women is doing and what women has done is what man is doing."
And the world turns...............................................................

Men are not always the bread winner. I am the bread winner in my family. I have a master's degree and work in a professional capacity. My husband was one quarter short of a bachelor's degree, and works in a service profession making less than $12 an hour.
I also do the laundry, dishes, most of the cooking, take out the trash, grocery shop, pay the bills, and many other things. So... they do not always.
In our society women did not work until the second world war and were not expected to work outside the home.

I make as much money as my boyfriend. Men are no longer the only bread winners in this world. If you want to know why some still are, it's because there still isn't equal pay for equal work in many parts of the world (or the country for that matter)

Almost always, they are the breadwinners because:
1. Men are more socially inclined than women; they want to mingle with others; they want to meet new people & interact with them. After office hours, they don't go home right away; they stay out & enjoy the evening with friends.
2. As much as possible, they avoid household work (laundry, washing the dishes, cooking, etc.). They love the children but they only play with them (not to change their diapers, feed them, etc.).
3. They have the feeling of self-fulfillment, or, superiority feeling, if they are the ones who provide for all the needs of their families.
