Hi,
Many answers here are clearly nonsense. I can't give you a definitive answer without observing the dog and your family interact but I have one suggestion to make. Who feeds the dog? Your wife?

I tell everyone with a dog question to watch the Dog Whisperer, that guy is amazing!

He practices dog psychology - but the reality of it, is it's not the dogs he teaches, it's the people. Anyway, there are several possibilities as already stated and any of them might be right (except for the idiot upskirt and beastiality posts). Anyway, the best thing to do is observe your wife walking the dog - maybe video tape her from the time she leaves the house to the time she gets back (best results would be if the dog doesn't see you) Then have her do the same for you, from the moment you grab the leash - observe the difference in your body language - because that is what the dog is doing.

It's not anything you are saying I can assure you that.

Good luck!

you, your wife and your dog should all walk together. Get to know your wife's route with him. As noted by other responders, start small and work your way up. Let your wife carry the lead for a few minutes, then you take it (silently - without dog knowing it) then switch back. After a few days, let the dog know you're changing leads. If he keeps walking, that's good! After a couple days, try again to take him yourself - short walks if he'll go. That way he won't feel like your wife is neglecting him (make sure you stick to the familiar route(s)) ... Good luck!

Well, the only thing that I can suggest to you, is to play with the dog in the house, and pet him a lot. I have two dogs, and they listen to my husband but don't go out with him at all. With me they like to go out and when I take them to the doggie park, they get in my car with no problem. I think also, that they might like the soothing voice of your wife. It might not be anything that you are doing wrong, it is just their preference of people. Dogs are like humans in that sense either they love you or not. In this instance they might just like you. Just keep trying and talking to them in a lower tone, that might help. Good luck.

You should all three go for a walk if possible. Let you wife have control of the dog and see what it is that she does differently. Maybe she allows the dog to have a loose leash and let him explore, where you require him to stay right by your side and he gets yelled at/dicsiplined more...

I don't know your living situations but i know a lot of the time the wife is home all day and spends more time with the dog, making it more comfortable to hang around with her. This could be the case. Try spending more time with the dog to let it know that it can be comfortable with you too.

He is spending more time with your wife. When you take him out he is wondering why she is not coming. Next time have a bag with cooked chicken in your pocket give him a bit every 10 Min's for 1/2 an hour then get the lead.( hay presto).

I strongly believe that dogs know the roles of their people. My babies will not play rough with me. EVER. Even if I try. My boyfriend can push them and wrestle with them and get them to playfully bite him and I will try at the same time, and as soon as i put my hand in my boy's face... he will not nip. he will lick. On the other hand, they prefer to be with me when they are tired... I think you just have different roles. If the dog won't do anything with you, he may be scared. If you adopted him then he may have had a bad experience with a previous male. There are all kinds of things.
I would start with "baby steps"... get him to come with you and give him treats... praise him whenever he starts to walk with you... those kinds of things.
good luck

we had the same problem with our staffie he was so stubborn! you can change it though if your wife is willing to be a little stand offish with him!! you need to be the one to praise him when your there obviously if your not there then she will still have to praise him for his good behaviour. she needs to not walk him at all and he''ll soon realise that if he wants to go out it will be with you or not at all. he'll soon miss his walks and will come round, when he does make it seem like the most exciting thing he has ever done and he'll soon discover your not a threat to him and more of his playmate!!

Your wife's voice is probably soothing and calming, whereas your voice might be more gruff and commanding. Is this a recent issue? Have you had the dog for long? Our male dog definitely looks to me more often than my husband. I sweet talk him and my husband just uses his regular deep voice. Maybe that is why.
