This is a tough question. If your baby can walk around and go outside to go potty, seems to have a full set of wits, and has no extreme pain, then he is probably fine. Being old is not an illness. Even if your little poodle spends all day on his favorite cushion and sleeps most of the time because he is very old, it doesn't mean you need to put him down. You are not being selfish if he is having a comfortable retirement. Your vet can even give you some very affordable "doggie arthritis medicine" that can give your little guy considerable comfort in his later years. As long as his life is not a burden to him, feel free to let him decide when to go to sleep.

You don't mention what size poodle it is, so:

Miniature Poodle: 13-15 years
Standard Poodle: 10-13 years
Toy Poodle: 12-14 years

As far as when to put an animal to sleep, it depends on what their quality of life is. If the animal can still move around on its own, is eating and drinking normally, and seems comfortable, then it's probably not necessary to euthanize it. If it can't walk, won't eat/drink, and seems to be in pain/discomfort, then it may be time for euthanasia.
If you think it may be time for your dog, then I suggest talking with your vet. He/she can guide you with this decision. Just remember that it is YOUR decision and no one else can make it for you.

The Std Poodle has an average life expectancy of 10/11 yrs. I recently had to euthanize my 1st Std. She lived to be 13yrs 7mos. Her parents lived to be 15 & 13. Mini's will average 15/16 yrs & the toys can live past 20. As to when to euthanize - when the dog's quality of life diminishes to the point of pain & discomfort it is your judgement call.

I grew up with a toy poodle who was 15 when she died. My mom had a miniature who was 14 when he died.

As far as "putting them to sleep", I am not in favor of it unless they are in severe pain. Find a vet that you trust & who obviously LOVES animals & get his/her opinion if you have a sickly or older animal.

That depends on the health of the individual animal---is the pet in pain-able to get around on its own?

i think that the depends on the age of your poddle. they are only put to sleep if they are overweight, have health problems or are too old.
there are alot of dogs that suffer for those kinds of reasons.its better to put them to sleep than to see them suffer.

best of luck!!
