I was reflecting on the age of the earth recently and whether one believes it is 4.5 Billion years old or 8,500 years old, it struck me as odd that God waited such a long time to declare himself or herself to humanity. Taking the worst case and assuming that God created the world 8500 years ago, then why did God wait a minimum of 6300 years to reveal himself to us? The God of Abraham is nowhere to be found in the writings of civilizations from before that time.
Christianity is more recent still. If Jesus really was the Son of God and lived and died when the New Testament says he did, then Christianity is only 2000 years old. If Christians want us to believe theirs is the only and true faith then who the heck are Baal, Zeus, and Thor? All of them preceded Jesus Christ and Abraham’s God.

Are we to believe that the more recent a prophecy is the more accurate it is? In this case, Mohammed would appear to be more authoritative than Jesus, and we should all be Muslims, something that the Christian community will surely decry. Worse still, there are thousands today who claim to speak with God everyday. Many of them, like the Mormons, asserting the same authority as Jesus and Mohammed did. Perhaps we should start worshipping at the altar of Son of Sam? He spoke to God regularly through his dog. Or perhaps, he spoke to his dog through God. Perhaps he was just dyslexic and couldn't tell them apart? Who knows. This reasoning isn't well accepted by Christians, so perhaps older must be better. This, however, would dethrone Christianity and replace it with Judaism.

Let us suppose then that prophets aren't God's way of letting us know that he or she exists. After all, how can we test the veracity of a prophet? It does strike me as curious that God chose not to manifest him or herself to the Chinese or the Assyrians, the Aztec or the Mohawks or even the Tutsi. Why just the Jews? Could it be that God was intended only for the Jews and we have usurped him, trying to become members of an exclusive club we weren't invited to belong to?

The relative lack of antiquity of the Bible itself is also a problem when compared with the writings of the Sumerians, the Assyrians, the Indians and the Chinese. Since the “jealous” God of the Jews proclaimed numerous times that he wanted the Jews to stop worshipping other gods, there must have been other gods before him to complain about. If one views God as strictly a patron of the Jewish people, that would explain why she or he didn't share this patronage with other civilizations that came before. They were left to find their own versions of a god.

Without the advantage of antiquity, Christians seek to bolster the Bible by pointing to the story of Adam and Eve and claiming that this proves that all men are descended from them. Unfortunately the Bible itself contradicts this an assumption. After slaying Abel and being expelled from the sight of God, several curious things happened. God set a mark upon Cain to prevent “others” who might find him wandering from killing him. Who these others might be in a world with three people is open to question. He also settled thereafter in the land of Nod and took a wife. She must have belonged to an older branch of humanity, which God didn't oversee. Since the Bible offers no good explanation for her existence or for the existence of Nod it is clear that non-Jewish branches of the human tree don't fit into the plans of the God of Abraham.

Time certainly is the issue in the Bible and it astounds me that no one has spoken of the strange dilemma of God's tardiness in declaring himself before. Christianity is still in its infancy compared to man's history and Islam is even more so. Christians, Jews and Muslims claim that each of their faiths is the “true” one and point to the “success” of their creed as evidence. There once were hundreds of other, older faiths throughout the world, none of which conformed to the beliefs of the book of Abraham. They were, however, stamped out by militant Christian and Islamic zealots, whose tyranny should not be used as evidence of their superiority.
Archaeological evidence has now linked Neanderthal man to burial practices, which include some form of ritual or faith, with grave goods and flowers being placed with the deceased. Whose God, if any did they worship and when did they know about him? That surely is the question.

I want to give you a standing ovation. Fantastically well put. I'd say that its because the Abrahamic god is no more real than any other.

The Bible says Adam had other children. "The days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years; and he had other sons and daughters." -- Genesis 5:4. Cain married either one of his sisters or one of his nieces, and it was his siblings who would want to kill him for murdering Abel.

1 - I agree with you almost entirely.
2 - I would like to note that paganism, in its simplest form, was around long before Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
3 - I have also noticed these "gaps" in the Bible. Also, according to the Bible, God didn't create the sun and moon/days until (what was it, the 3rd day?). If that is the case, all the preceding days could have been infinitely old. So, there isn't actually an accurate way of meauring the age of the Earth according to the Bible.

Very well thought out question!
I would say pray to each one and see if any answers. That's the best way. If the god in question does not reply you can safely assume the god either A. Doesn't exist or B. Doesn't care.

i hope you read all my answer as i read all your question..:)first,,,God didnt wait until 8,500 years ago to declare himself..from the first moment God created the globe and humans(Adam) God declared that the goal of this is to be worshiped..God made signs in horizons and ourself for those who don't believe in him.also he sent prophets ...hundreds of them whom we don't know them all and sent miracles with them...for us,,who didn't live at the prophets time God sent the Holy Quran the miracle of Prophet Mohammad, in the Quran there are a lot of miracles that prove the prophecy of Muhammad go to http://www.miraclesofthequran.com/ ..the Holy Quran has miracles that science find until these days. ..and why when u compared Mohammad and jesus you thought its impossible for Muhammad to be prophet? we don't claim that Jews and Christians have no true religion from God..they do but they changed it..Christians claim that jesus is son of God, some says he is God, some says he is 1 of 3..jews think they different from all humans cuz they chosen people of God, and claim Uzer is son of God a lot more human claims too...

The question just shows that you know very little about any religion lest of the true religion. As far as God's revelation in the Holy Bible. God did not waste his time revealing himself to man. He created him in the garden, in a perfect world, gave him every plant for food, Man chose to listen to Satan and believe Satan more than they believed in God. Thus God had to expell them from the garden. If the Bible contained all that was revealed we would have a book that was greater than the entire encyclopedia Britannica. The Holy Bible is book that has been given to us to give us faith in Him, it is historically accurate, though many will say it is not, it has proven to be accurate. If you read the Holy Bible you will find that God revealed himself to Enoch who was the seventh from Adam, he revealed himself to Noah a man of righteousness, who built an ark for the saving of all life, because God was going to destroy man because he had become so corrupt that it could not be redeemed. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD, After Noah, he spoke to the godly line of Shem, whom Abraham descended. The Bible concentrates on more of the redemption aspect than data, though it is historically accurate it was not written nor preserved to bea history book. The Holy Bible is a unique book there has never been a book that has been translated into more languages, perserved down the ages, been persecuted more, hated more, loved more, read more. The bible has been a best seller of any book ever published by man. The books that have been written about the Holy Bible are just as numerous and prolific. There are more people who believe in the Bible more than any other book ever written. Though this does not mean that every one who believes in it is a Christian but only those who follow it, obey and practice its teachings. The Holy Bible is more revelant today than it has ever been. It remains to be relevant in millions and millions of people the world over.
However this in of itself does not make it the Holy Bible. It is the Holy Bible because it is the Word of God. Inspired by the Spirit of God. It remains to be alive and powerfully effective because God's Spirit continues to reveal God's will through it to his creation man. It is the Word of God because God makes it so! It is the most powerful elements in all of history because it is HIS STORY!
You can deny all this, discount it for lunatics - but in the end - that wont change what the Word of God is! It is beyond your comprehension, your mental ability to fathom, or your attempts to search out its depths its heights, its width or breadth, it has a glory you can not destroy. You may try, but it avails you nothing to do so and you only bring swift destruction upon your head for doing so. - God's Word is God's Word because God has spoken it - He said it I believe that settles it.

Even Rome and Athens are mentioned in the bible. Some writings were scratched out and some kept by the scholars of that particular time. As far as God "waiting" to reveal Himself, he chooses to do so- He's God. Good question, though.

God can only work with human beings at the (biological, spiritual, social, intellectual) evolutionary level they've reached. People have grown in their ability to perceive God. That's why God is so barbaric in the OT -- it wasn't that God was really different, but that people were projecting more of their barbarism onto God.

I concur, the god of the Christians is a mere baby in contrast to many of the other gods.
Myself, I worship the Aesir (Norse Gods such as Thor) because I am Norse and I feel much more connected to them then any others.
