I have an old dell 500mhz p2, 15gb, 128 ram, dvd drive desktop. I have other laptops, desktops in my home. (which means i obviously have a router) i bought a wireless card for it so someone could use it to surf, check email, etc. which are basic tasks for it. it worked for a while good then it started running very slow. so i would reinstall the os when it would happen. i heard linux makes old ones like that run faster and better. Would it do any better if i wiped the drive the and installed linux? Would linux even work at all? if so how good?

Im downloading "Kubuntu Desktop" right now and want to know if it even worth burning the cd and going on that old pc to do this.
thanks

The system you describe will definitely run linux without a problem and will likely run faster compared to if it was running an older version of Windows (e.g. Windows for workgroups, v3, etc.).

I am not familiar with "Kubuntu Desktop" but you might also want to check out Red Hat, SuSe, or another of the "established" versions of linux, especially if this is your first foray into using linux.

It's a good thing you chose Kubuntu, coz it's a light linux. With kubuntu, you could choose which software to install or not. Some linux out there is so heavy because it contains a lot of unwanted software. Even a new computer couldn't stand it.

Before you try to install you can download some Live CD which allow you to run Linux OS in your PC without install it.

Happy Trying...

Yup, thats fine it'll work OK - even on an ancient P500 with just 128 MB of RAM.

Check the minimum requirements here:
