The puppy cut is the most manageable hairstyle for a shih-tzu. The long ones are also nice, but you must brush them religiously or they get horrible tangles and mats. If you do get a puppy cut, make sure to put a little sweater on him or her in cold weather.

I also own a Shih Tzu and here are a few of my favorite styles:

Typically I will try and take Daisy in for grooming every four weeks for a professional brushing, combing, and bath.
It really depends on the dogs personality and what the owner would like, so here are a few ideas for her:
Personality Cut: http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/anjolique108/personalitycut.jpg
This is by far the most popular groom. It keeps the dog well groomed and is easy to manage. The body and legs are clipped uniformly between ¼ to 1 inch in length. The tail is scissored and the head is scissored short with bangs. Brush the ears and tail at home weekly and go back in 8-10 weeks.
Breed Groom:

calls for mostly brushing and combing with very little clipping involved. The hair on top of the head is put in a pony tail by parting the hair from the corner of the eye to the ear opening on both sides and then from ear to ear on the back of the head. You can gather the hair in center on the top rear of the head and tie with a rubber band, and then often followed with a bow. The groin area is clipped, hair in the ears removed and bottoms of the pads clipped.
The Puppy Cut:

Very few people keep their Shih Tzus in full coat because of the maintenance involved and the matting that can develop without frequent brushing. This is a nice clip if you want a full fluffy look and don’t mind some brushing weekly. This can be accompanied by bangs and clipping the top of the nose instead of using a pony tail. The length of the coat is established by a lot of hand scissoring which involves much more time and skill on the part of the groomer (this translates to a higher price!).

There are some beautiful long hair styles for shih tzu's, but they take alot of time and effort to maintain, including daily brushing and combing!
Just be sure to keep the hair out of the dogs eyes!

the best cut for your shih tzu is none of the above. the best cut is the cut where you trim every thing down except for the ears tail and legs. How do i know you might ask. because that is how i cut my male shih tzu and everybody loves it. i wish i could and a pic but i dont know how

well it depends on things like ....if you want it to be long (yes it can be pretty) but it will require DAILY brushing and to do it properly it will take 1-3 hrs of it too!! if you want it shorter (very cute) most people ask the groomer to take down the body with a 7 or 5 blade and to do a character face(little rounded face with a visor) and also let the tail grow long and pretty (not to hard to brush and manage) and you bring them in about every 4-8 weeks to get it done again ...many people try the long thing and the dog dose not get brushed properly or at all and so they get matted and all the groomer can do is shave them... and the owner realizes it is cute and easier to care for!! ;)

i'm a pet groomer and have been at it for years. my advice is if the shihtzu still has a lot of "puppy hair" wait to cut it. have it trimmed up to help the little one get used to the process. if the dog is older then it's pretty much up to the owner. if she has time and wants to take care of the long coat, leave it, but be sure to brush AND comb daily, getting down to the skin each time. the only way to remove matted coat is to shave it off and then its not so cute!! good luck and my favorite length is a 5/8 blade!

Oreo is such a cute name. I thin themost popular for young pups is short hair, like the one in the middle of this site-
http://www.shihtzuandfurbabyrescue.com/
but some really fancy and older and bigger ones have long hair cuts like this- (this site also has some info-
