I prefer to use a spray bottle when my cat gets in trouble. But be careful because if they are on top of a table and take off they can scratch it. The other thing I do is put double sided tape on the sides of my couch so she won't scratch it. The tape comes off easily enough when I have visitors over.

Cats hate the feeling of tape (sticky side) double sided and also the feeling of aluminum foil on their paws try something like that on the chair for a while and they will probably stop
also you could squirt them with some water with a spray bottle or squirt gun to deter them

I have to cover my favorite futon cushion with a plastic sheet to protect it from my cats. There are chair protectors you can also use. You can also try aversion training with scents and water bottles, but since you can't be there all the time, your best bet is to cover the chair with something that can take the abuse and uncover it for company.

If it is an indoor cat you'll have it declawed at the entrance toes. The cat's do not leave out the claws, they may be able to nonetheless do the scratching conduct with no need to fear approximately you yelling at them, and you do not must fear approximately the cat destroying your furnishings. It makes for peace of brain the entire manner circular.

Good luck with that - I tried waving papers at my cat when she jumped on the furniture which stopped her from jumping on it when I was in the house - but considering there is still hair on it I assume she still jumps on it when I am not home - Cats are too smart!

A water gun or spray bottle is the best I have found to train my cats. Be consistent, they have to be sprayed several times before they get it!!
