John 3 v22 - 24
'Ater this, Jesus and his followers went into the area of judea, where he stayed with his followers and baptised people,

John was also baptising in Aenon near Salim...

John the baptizer and Jesus where holding seperate baptisms one in the North and one in the South at the same time...

Obviously Jesus had not died yet, and it was a year to the start of his ministry.. so
It must be for jewish ritual cleansing as both Jesus and John where from jewish backgrounds. .

The answer, I think you will find, is that the gospel according to John is not that accurate. This is why only Mark, Matthew & Luke are taught in schools.

You're right about that, and that did cause a bit of confusion for people back then. In fact, they were believing that John the Baptist was the Messiah, not Jesus, until John cleared that up.
In short, Jesus just set the precedent for baptism after John. John is the promised one who was to come and declare the way of the Messiah.

Maybe the explanatiion is the one added a little further on inJohn's Gospel:

John 4:1-3
4:1 The Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John, 2 although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.
(from New International Version)

It was really only the disciples who were doing the baptisms under His authority.

John baptised people with a baptism of repentance.
Jesus baptised with a baptism of forgiveness.

That's why later on, all of John's converts got rebaptised with the baptism of Christ (although by then his disciples were doing it)

Absolutely right, ritual cleansing as part of strictly Judaic purity laws as practised by the Essene community and other ascetic sects. The Romanisation of Jesus and JtB, and the creation of "Christian" rituals, ignores this.

You have to remember that all the gospels were written many years after the events and based on hearsay. So you cannot rely on the accuracy of any of them
