How Did You Die?
Did you tackle that troble that came your way
With a resolute heart and cheerful
Or hide your face from the light of day
With a craven soul and fearful?
Oh, a trouble's a ton, or trouble's an ounce,
Or a trouble is wat you make it,
And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts,
But only how did you take it?

Your are beaten to the earth? Well, well, what's that?
Come up with a smiling face.
It's nothing against you to fall down flat,
But to lie there - that's disgrace.
The harder you're thrown, why the higher you bounce;
Be proud of your blackened eye!
It isn't the fact that your licked that counts,
It's how did you fight - and why?

And though you be done to the death, what then?
If you battled th best you could,
If you played your part in the world of men,
Why, the Critic will call it good.
Death comes with a crawl, or comes with a pounce,
And whether he's slow or spry,
It isn't the fact that your'e dead that counts,
But only how did you die?

This poem by Edwin Arlington Robinson. 1869– has been my favorite since HS. It still gives me the chills down my spine.

Richard Cory

WHENEVER Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
"Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich—yes, richer than a king,
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head.

Purple Cow ^_^

by Gelett Burgess
Published in The Lark, 1895

I never saw a Purple Cow,
I never hope to see one.
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one.

Reply (To The "Purple Cow")
by Gelett Burgess

Ah, yes, I wrote the "Purple Cow"--
I'm sorry, now, I wrote it!
But I can tell you anyhow,
I'll kill you if you quote it.

I wrote this...CHANGE
You told me to change,
To be more like her.
You told me to smile,
to smile like her.
You told me to laugh,
to laugh like her.
You told me to love you,
to love you like she did.
You told me you loved me,
but you really loved her.
