They dont need ID, as long as he is 24 months (and looks under 24 months) no one will ask to see a birth certificate. You can always bring it, but you wont be asked unless he looks old enough to be 2. If you bring bottles, make sure you put them in a ziploc bag. They aren't part of the 3-1-1 rule, but I learned the hard way that during pressure changes inflight, the bottles will leak. Just make sure when you go through security, you take the bottles of juice and/or formula out of the diaper bag and put it in the bin. Also, bring a decongestant, babies can't equilize the pressure in their ears and many get ear infections, so give the baby Pedia Care or Tylenol Cold before you board (plus it will help them sleep). Make sure your liquids, gels and creams are in a ziploc bag and have that out at screening too. Any medicines, butt creams, hand sanitizers, lotions etc need to be in a bag.

Have him suck a pacifier or drink a bottle on take off and landing so they can keep equilizing their ears, that is when the greatest pressure changes are. Every time we fly, I do this and my daughter doesnt scream mid-flight. BUT she always gets an ear infection when we get back home. She's 6 months old and already flown 4 times.

You do not need any type of identification for your 1 year old son. As long as he is under 2, he can sit on your lap free of charge.

make sure you bring different snacks and different types of toy or books...toddlers get bored with one toy after a short while, so if you bring different toys, you can keep him entertained for awhile. i traveled with my son when he was one and thats what i did...so he was entertained till he took a nap...if he still sucks on a pacifier, bring that because sucking helps the ears while popping...or if he still uses a bottle..that will do too....if he doesnt use either, just drinkin something during takeoff and landing should help....as for sitting, you dont need to bring anything coz as you said he'll be in your lap..hope i helped

Bring his car-seat and add an infant's fare to your trip. Lap babies are not safe at all if there is an emergency; I have seen them get hurt when there is just rough air and not an actual crash. And if there is an emergency landing or a crash, his chances of surviving are so much lower than yours unless he is properly restrained. It is not worth risking your child's safety just to save some money.
