she has very dry skin and the vet recomended Benadryl or else a cortizone shot and I dont want steriods pumped into her- how long can she stay on benadryl

What are you feeding her? If you bought it at the grocery store or Wal Mart, that would be the first thing I would change.

The shot doesnt always work I spent a ton of money for nothing. Try a Omega-3 Gel cap. You can get it from Doctors Foster and Smith. Its supposed to help with the skin issues.

What you are seeing is a very common problem with Lab/Poodle mixes. She can be on Benedryl for quite a while however it won't remain effective for the long term.
You need to look into diet changes(good quality food with no corn, wheat, soy or beet pulp) and adding oil to the diet..

You need to get her on a daily vitamin like Dermcaps. It will help her dry skin. Also she should be on a good brand of dog food. Benedryl is quite safe for her and is 1 Mg per pound of body weight

1st, it would help to know what brand of dog food you are feeding her. I highly recommend Nutro Ultra . For the dry skin, use Flax seed oil mixed in her food. Good luck!

All I know is steroids is bad, they shouldnt be on them for long periods of time
