Ive been thinking about this one for a while n i have a theory:

our ears pick up sound waves and convert them to sound. we know that when something hits(falls) on something else it generally makes a noise. this noise is sound waves which we can hear, if our ears are not present in the forest there is nothing to convert the waves into sound and therefore the sound doesn't exist only the sound waves
