Dogs are animals of imagery association. When you first got your puppy, you probably came home and instantly lathered it with pets and love and words of encouragement. The puppy associates the sound of your car with the door opening. The door opening with you walking through. You with love and attention.

Dogs actual imagine (or image) you coming home and petting them.

When you're late coming home, they may even WORRY in imagery.

They wait and wait for you and begin to think about you so much, they start interacting with things they see you interact with while you're home (which is why the pillow on the couch ends up on the floor, or you always find your dog on your favorite loveseat he KNOWS he's not allowed on ---when you're home).

So...in short, haha, that's why our dogs greet us!

They associate YOU with LOVE! :)

Because in the wild, lower ranking members of the pack are left to "baby sit" the Alpha female's puppies. Upon returning the subordinate members would "greet" the Alpha's to reinforce the bond in the pack. Younger members do this to encourage regurgitation (a meal).

Hope this is the answer you are looking for.

Dogs as well as other animals seem to have no concept of time. You could be gone for 5 minutes or 5 hours and they still greet you like you were gone for a week. It also has to do with respect for the Alpha image in their eyes (YOU). It is for respect as well as comfort to them.

Mine great me because they love me and are happy to see me. If they don't greet me then I know that they were naughty while I was gone. Usually it means that they tore up the garbage...
