i know about all the search engines used in windows for me to use in order to open and find files what i need is somethig for ex: i have 1,000 names i want to be able to type the last few letters of that persons last name and for it to show me all the names i have that start with those letters, and so on so everytime i type a different letter or more letters it gives me all the matching names, and i need a sofware that would organize all of this.

It depends on what type of platform you have, if you have a windows XP you could just go to "start" then "search" on the right hand side, but if you have something else i would reccomend google desktop. (that works with XP also)

Agent Ransack is great for searching your PC. It supports regular expressions - and is approximately 1436% faster than Windows search - and it's free.

Click on your desktop and press FLAG-F

I personally use cygwin. From there a search is easy:
find /cygwin/c -exec grep -i 'searchstr in file' {} \;

or if you are looking for a filename:
find /cygwin/c -print | grep -i 'searchstr in filename'
