Having directed theatre for over 30 years I can give you an overview of your question as simply as possible. First, think about it, all roles are character roles. But I understand what you mean. Some actors believe you can hide more of the real you behind a good character role. If you're referring to a character from a different century, or a non-human character, or Shakespears characters-some actors have an affinity for these types. They enjoy the costumes, the type of hair, if a dialect is required-these are some of the variables that shape their decision. But no matter what world the playwright has created you must always remember that the truth of the character must always come first. He/she must be as real as the world of the play requires it to be. If you are not true to that then you, as you, will be easilly seen thru by the audience. Then you'd learn to hate character roles quick enough. If you'd never acted in a character role and someone give you the chance by all means do it. Be prepared to do research and use your very fertile imagination. I do hope that helps a bit.

yes charachter roles are fun, especialy since it would be reniassance/midevil themed. I love this time period in euopean hsotry , however I am probably too young to audtition and me living on the other side of the US doesn't really help.
also characther roles are not always important, sometimes the supporting roles do more work and are better than the lead roles, because in a way, you feel more needed. with out your smaller, perhaps non-speaking parts you can help the show go along smoother. and anyway you look at it, when your onstage your in charachter. if that means your a table, or a basic waiter, there is a history, no matter how small, about the characther and why he/she acts that way.
God bless you in your endevors.
