They're good if the horse is good. 2-1, if you like the horse, take it to win, maybe to place if you want to hedge, or take in an exacta, straight or boxed. It's not worth taking to show at that price, though. 8-1, if you like the horse, you can take it any combination of win, place and show and the payout will be decent. If the odds are under 5-1, I don't advocate taking a place bet unless the field is huge. Incidentally, the other answer is wrong. 2-1 will pay somewhere around $6, 8-1 will pay at least $18. In parimutuel wagering, you assume the two dollars coming back, and the odds reflect on the profit you make.
