Basically my boyfriend cut his index finger on a piece of glass on Christmas Eve and he is saying that the end of his finger is numb and somtimes tingly. The cut itself has sealed without scab but it is red and swollen. Is this normal or should he get is checked out?

Hi there!

I actually cut my middle finger on a glass bowl that broke 10 days before my wedding (in October 2004) so I know how your boyfriend feels. I needed 5 stitches though. Most likely the numbness/tingling is the nerves he severed trying to re-connect. Since he didn't have stitches and the wound is healing on it's own, chances are he is ok---but there could still be some nerve damage. I'd suggest he go to the doctor just to have it checked out, to make sure there are no internal infections or lack of blood circulation. I still don't have complete feeling in the part of my finger that was cut, and sometimes the feeling never comes back. It really depends on the person. Hope this helps!! :)

I'd suggest getting it checked out at A&E or the GP's surgery. It should not be red and swollen a fortnight after the cut, and he may have damaged a nerve or the swelling is pressing on one. He may need anti-biotics as it sounds like the finger has become infected. Glass particles may be left in which would cause it.It is always better to see a Doctor if a small cut doesn't heal properly.

you should get him to the doctor now. he cut a nerve and the red color could be several things that aren't good. I just went through this last year, a utility knife cut into the palm of my right hand and I had the same feeling that you described. I had stitches, and after a few months I could feel my finger again, but that could have been different.
go to the doc and get it checked, if for no other reason than to make sure he is OK. nerve damage and infection are nothing to play with.
good luck

get to the doctors! too late for a&e now but should get it checked out to make sure its not infected and that no nerve damage has been done. fingers take a while to mend (i mangled mine on a lawn mower 18 months ago and one is still numb at the end) but its better to be safe than sorry! see your GP! Hope its ok!

probably damaged a nerve or 2. I had a big gash near the tip of my finger a few years back and am still part numb at the tip

get it checked. it could be that there is some infection in it, maybe a shard of glass still there. but it also sounds like he may have severed a surface nerve ending, which in time should regain feeling, but even still its best to be on the safe side.

Ask your doctor about an exercise routine. Regular exercise, such as walking three times a week, may reduce neuropathy pain, improve your muscle strength and help control blood sugar levels. Gentle routines such as yoga and tai chi might also help.

He should get it checked out, but the numbness is more then likely from him cutting a nerve.

If he dosent get feeling back in another month or two, then he needs to have it looked at.
