Good question!

Your breeder should have the puppy's first shot given and a good vet check up. Do not buy a puppy that has not had a check up and health check by a vet.

The first shot will be a distemper. You will need to get your puppy into the vet for two more distemper boosters given four weeks apart from each other.
At about 4-5 months old your puppy is ready for his first rabies shot.

Will he be around other dogs? Where do you live? Those are important questions to look into before getting more vaccinations.
If he is around other dogs then get bordatella, giardia, etc.
Are you in a wooded area? Get the lyme's vaccine.

Your veterinarian will help you decide which are the best vaccines for your puppy. Understand though, your puppy does not need everything there is a vaccine for.

You will need to start your puppy on Heartgard, a once a month chewable that prevents heartworm. Your vet will do a yearly bloodcheck for heartworm as well.

Your puppy will need to be dewormed. Every puppy has worms,
You can buy some dewormer at the pet store. Evict ds is a good brand. You will need to give your pup the dewormer every ten days for the first 4 times, then 14 days apart for 3 times, then once a month until about 6-7 months old. This will make sure to kill worms at all stages of development.

Also, when you first get your puppy, bring a stool sample to the vet when you bring him for his check up. This way the vet can verify that an otc dewormer is good. If the puppy has any unusual types of worms then he will need a specific medication given to you by your vet.

Make sure you buy a crate for him to sleep in. His crate is his bedroom and safe place. It is great for house training and he will feel more secure being in it when you are gone.
Supply plenty of sturdy toys.
Buy a good dog food, the breeder can tell you what she has the puppy on.
You should also buy some books on the breed and training.
Puppy kindergarten is a great place to go when he is learning to socialize.

Good luck! Hope this helped!

You will need to wait @ least 3-4 months for tricks meanwhile the trick your going to have is keeping this very active dog occupied.Potty training will begin @ 8- 10 weeks but don't expect to do that over night. It will take persistence and reward. The little bladder won't be developed completely until around 5-6 months. Then feed and wait approximately 15-20min. and then place him where you plan for him to go when you are not there.Pads or paper or outside.Once he goes then take him back to that area. This won't happen over night.Puppies often go 2-3 times at night. There are many ways to train your new puppy ,go to Pets Mart and get a book on crate training that seems to be the best these days unless you are able to give him your undivided attention 24/7.Good Luck And please prepare your self and be informed before you get him so you will be able to enjoy your new family member.Good Luck!!!!!

Make sure you follow the shot schedule given to you, or else miss a dosage and you'll have to start the series over. Make sure you have a a cleaner designed to break down enzymes not just an ordinary household cleaner to clean up messes your dog makes..and a new dog in the home will always end up making some. Have patience, be vigilant. Don't spank your dog or shove it's nose in any mess it makes, that is negative training. Get your dog with it's shots and enrolled into puppy classes as soon as possible.

When it comes to housebreaking, I recommend crate training the pup and for potty training... get the pup a body harness and 5-6 foot leash. Tie end of leash to your belt whenever the dog is indoors and not in a crate. Watch dog so you'll see when it starts to signal/circle/scratch that it needs to go. Immediately walk dog outside, give command word, lots of praise, and treat immediately when completed (keep them in your pocket for quick access)

Remember, pups can only hold for as many months they are old IE 2 month = 2 hours So watch the pup for signs it needs to go, and watch the clock.

Thoroughly research the breed, talking to other JRT owners, read books, have everything you need for the puppy prior to getting it, make sure you don't keep things on the floor or near the floor he can get ahold of because puppies can and do chew EVERYTHING until trained not to, make sure to get a crate for potty training. The BIGGEST piece of advise I can give you is if you are getting the puppy from a breeder, buy a blanket for the puppy and take it with you to pick it up. Rub the blanket all over the mother dog and any litter mates left, every inch of the blanket. Animals associate by smell and this will give him a familiar smell in the new surroundings and will greatly reduce any separation anxiety he may have. You do not need papers to get shots or to do anything except enter the dog in an AKC show or breed it If you don't have shot records then yes he needs shots. If the breeder was just handing them out I'm sure the pup hasn't had shots. You need to take it to the vet ASAP because I'm also sure it has worms and maybe parvo and distemper. I hope not but go see a vet right now

A new puppy should be treated like an adopted child. In short, check his health with a vet, get his shots and teach him to walk on a leash, etc. Local pet stores usually have classes in dog obedience as so local kennel clubs. Treat him properly and you will have a loyal friend for many years.

I have a 10 mth old lab, the first things we did when we got her were--POTTY TRAIN!!, every hour on the hour we took her outside even if she didnt have to go for about a week or two--yes its tough but now, if she has to go, she will actually either go to the door and make a little bark, or scratch at the door, we havent had ONE accident since, and it's almost been a year, training to walk on a leash is good too, and not barking and not jumping are good things to teach too!! MAke sure you get them checked out at the vet and get all your shots. And fed them good actually great quality food, they are worth it!!!

Crate train thim first of all. We just got a doberman. and in about 3 weeks she is housbroken. For a few nights, they will whimper but just let them know that the crate is a safe place for her to rest. And watch Cesar Millan the dog whisperer. It comes on A&E. He has helped us alot.
