The ones I mean are the motorists who put high vis jackets in the rear window of thier cars, are they trying to impress or pose as something they are not(Police) I have one but it lives in the boot as the excuse that it is readily available does not wash with me(35yrs Paramedic)?

Are you talking about volunteers (we call them volleys in my part of the United States)? In the US (I don't know how it goes in your part of the world) there's a lot of volunteer firefighters and EMT/paramedics out in the rural areas. They tend to be a bit overly proud of themselves, and adorn their cars with decals, license plate holders, etc, that all announce their status. A lot of them also have their turnout gear and helmets in their back window. Honestly, (as a professional paramedic) I find it annoying. First off, it's only going to get dirty and banged up, chewed on by the dog, played with the kids, etc, while sitting in the rear window. Secondly, it affects visibility, and thirdly, the gear would stay in better conditon and be easier to put on if it just stayed in a nice bag in the trunk (or boot, I guess).

If it makes you feel any better, I doubt they are trying to impersonate police; they are probably over eager volunteers trying to impress.

Be safe!

Yeah, I keep my hi-vis jacket in the boot, too (it's useful if I have to change a tyre in the dark, etc). Can't understand people who try to draw attention to themselves on the road - I'd rather keep a low profile!
And I agree with Rachael about the hats ...

Yep...

I know a very 'sad' individual who does this. He even used to drive around in a clapped out Montego with an amber light stuck on the roof of his car, wearing his high vis coat and his Duvall security uniform... chatting on C/B :/ You have to question some people's sanity or grip on reality.

I reckon it's road maintenance staff who want to look important. The other one that I often wonder about it elderly people with hats on their parcel shelf - what's that all about?

They are obviously immitating police. It is also against the law in the UK for anyone to immitate the police or even suggest.

I think they are just trying to say take a look at me cause I'm important.
