Courage - A quality of spirit that enables you to face danger or pain without showing fear or having fear.
Therefore this quote means that whatever it was in the past that has been done, "the thing", was courageous of whoever had did it. The real courage that involves you, or he/she that this quote is referring to, is the courage shown in what has been done before.
We do different things in life. We face different, diverse situations. How we handle those can of course be classified courageous. "A great part of courage" is emphasizing on courage as a characteristic of one. So, as I mentioned before, whatever had been done in the past is part of the courageous character that has developed overtime.

I interpret it as meaning that preparation is a great deal of what makes a person courageous. Having trained and prepared for the thing, makes your actions easier in time of need.

mayby how a person has handles difficult issues in the past like did you run from adversity, or did you dive in and face it. courage is not running its facing the tough things. mayby the quote is you have courage if you have faced it before and atleast tried.
