If you are a believing Christain, you were given the authority by Jesus to perform it. However, unless you are well versed in Scirpture, I would hesitate. Do not attempt this by yourself. You do not know how deep the possession is. Remember, you are dealing with a spiritual entity, who is smarter and stronger than you.
Some entities can be expelled quickly, others may take days or weeks. It is psychologically and spiritually demanding. You should prepare ahead of time. Prayer and fasting are very important. Confess any sins you have, and ask also to be forgiven of any you can no longer remember. I assure you, the entity will remind you.

You MUST do this in the Name of Jesus! Saints and the Virgin Mary, will not help you at all! You must cover yourself and all present with the Blood of Jesus. Do not carry on a conversation with the entity, it will only tell you lies and do anything it can to direct your attention away from the exorcism.
You must, in Jesus Name, ask it its name, and the moment it will depart. Repeat this often! You must be consistent with your prayers and commands.
If you make any kind of mistake, the entity will be all over you.

You may see, hear and even smell things that you have never before been exposed to. The entity will attack you verbally, call you every name in the book and then some. The assault is usually emotional, mental or spiritual. It will curse you, God and especially Jesus. This is a taunt. The entity itself might assault you personally, directly or indirectly. Some of its underlings may follow you home and harass you in many ways.
Put a hedge around yourself, your helpers, plus your home and family.
This is no joke! You must be prepared! You might want to read up on this subject beforehand. This should not be taken lighty.
It is very serious and dangerous. The Lord be with you.
Remember this, Jesus said: "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."
Matthew 18:20. There is strength, power and obedience in this action.

Most People have the wrong idea about "Exorcism". Hollywood has it all wrong.

You must be truly Borne Again,(Saved).
You must be Filled with The Holy Spirit, with a good understanding of the operation of The Gifts of The Holy Spirit, specifically; Discerning of spirits.
Prayed up,( Make a habit of Prayer).
You must have a solid understanding of The Scriptures, well grounded in God's WORD.
You better NOT have ANY unconfused Sin in your life, the Demon will know it.

If you fit into this description, you can tell the Demon to go in Jesus Name, and he/she must go. Be sure you are not as the Seven Sons of Sceva: Acts 19:14 - 16

Exorcisms are very tricky things. We are usually dealing with very powerful demons that will try to trick us and turn the words of our faith against us. However, I believe that any Christian can perform an exorcism. The thing to remember is that Christ is casting the demon out, not us. I would never try this alone and hopefully never have to be part of one but if I were, the more believers there, the better.

This is sick, but I know this:

The exorcism in Catholocism must be approved by the diacese (meaning a bishop has approved it) and performed under his supervision by the local Priest, or if the parish has no able clergyman, by the highest ranking layman in the Parish, called a Churchwarden.

In those Protestant groups that believe in such things, it can be performed by any believer.

Depends on the "church". Catholicism, you have to be a priest of high standing according to a certain set of criteria they set, and TONS of training.

Frankly, shamans of all walks of life have been performing exorcisms successfully (real shamans that is) and so on, so I wouldn't get too gaga over the "church's" view on it.
