After all nature eventually makes gas or oil aut of everything we dump and then leaks it into the enviornment. It seems to me it would be a lot better to make the oil and eliminate the landfill. It would solve several problems in one stroke. Why not steer a course in this direction?

Excellent question.

Organic (meaning carbon-based) landfill waste decomposes and releases Methane gas. Some landfills to recover this gas to create energy rather than letting it pollute the air. It requires some money and know-how to capture this gas from the land fill. Special pipes need to be installed throughout the fill. It's easiest to do this in a newly constructed land fill than an existing one.

In any case, you would not eliminate the land fill. You would still have leftover material. However, it can be compressed to the point when the land can safely be used for other purposes.

It pollutes the environment 1000 times more than using oil and throwing out stuff. It also takes more energy to produce than it creates. Since we have a 500 year supply of oil just within the boundaries of the continental US, it makes no sense whatsoever.

That's why.
