A large number of the addicts break the law to feed their habit, the rest destroy their lives and those of their families as well as not contributing to society. While they should be pitied and treated as humans with a disease, almost everything about the lifestyle is a negative, a abhorrent to the rest of us, no wonder people avoid them and their chaos

I can tell you ahy the guys are defensive, and I assume you knoe why the women are defensive.
A person whu uses drugs or other substances are defensive because they are in fear and shame, and try to cover up these emotions.Their ajendas are basically self centred, and they do not consider how they are really affecting others,or better still how others allow them to hurt, and abuse them.
you see a practising user of drugs and alcohol feel they are good, its the others.this is only an assumption but perhaps your question is about your own personal experience and you are having a relationship with an addict.
If you are then perhaps you are being defensive about where your coming from with all this.I hope you are ok with my answer.
if you are a friend of a user try a meeting of A L A N O N.

I don't agree with drugs, the world would probably be a better place without them.. but I had a close friend who had a heroin problem, there were a number of reasons why he got into it and sadly he didnt make it, but based on this I know how hard it is for people to deal with addictions. You should never judge someone purely on the basis that they take drugs, you dont know what life's thrown at them. For some, its just a way of getting through the days.

I'm guessing you've never had your house broken into by a known heroin addict thats looking to steal from decent hard working people to fund their habit. We had that twice - by the same piece of filth.
Try going through shite like that and see how generous you feel towards scum like he was.

They need help, ridiculing them is not going to make their life any easier or help them get through probably the toughest time of their life. They get stuck........... and can't do anything about it
People who get onto drugs and become addicts are still good people...its not them that are bad people its the drugs that make them bad. my father is an alcoholic..... i consider that being a drug addict and its not him thats bad its the drink that makes him that way.

Are we? Hadn't noticed.
I think most people are horrified by the chaotic lives of people whose whole existence centres round drugs and whose families are torn apart as a result.
But I think many people regard recreational drug users (the ones with jobs, mortgages, happy, healthy children, good friends and good family relationships) as not much of an issue, really.
