You do not need a passport but a driver's license is not enough.

http://gocanada.about.com/od/canadatraveloverview/qt/uscitizenborder.htm driver's license on its own or a Social Security Card on its own are not valid ID to cross the Canadian border.

The following pieces of identification will serve as satisfactory proof of American citizenship to enter Canada.

Please note, however, that photocopies of ID are not acceptable, only originals:

* US passport

OR

* Birth certificate,

OR

* Certificate of citizenship or naturalization,

AND

* Photo ID, such as current driver's license

All U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid passport.

Alien permanent residents of the U.S. must present their Alien Registration Card, commonly called a “Green Card.”

If flying by air after January 23, 2007 you will need a passport. After Jan 1st, 2008 you will either need a passport or a passcard.

Hopefully, all you will need is a passcard for land and sea except for cruises. This is supposed to be cheaper than passports.

If you work their. You will still be able to use what you have used in the past without any further ID.

No not at the moment. If you are driving in, then you will need your passport to enter Canada by June 1, 2009. For air travel, you need a passport by Jan. 2007.

Here is an article link. It gives you all the info you need.

You will to fly in as of January 23, 2007. Driving I think won't be til May or June.

This is a completely asinine idea and it will only serve to separate us further and reduce tourism and cross border shopping for both countries. Ah well consider the source of the brain trust that came up with that one. D'uh b'ya

The only people who should need passports are visitors and landed immigrants without citizenship yet.

I am in the military stationed in Montana, I drive to Canada often from Montana. If you have a military I.D. they may let you by sometimes. Sometimes they will not without a passport. I would say to be on the safe side. You should get a passport. Also they will do a full background check on you if they please when you cross the border. One of my older friends could not get into Canada because of a DUI that happened 17 years ago.
