i went to buy a DVD near some BTS station with my boyfriend.one was a russian movie and another was a british comedy. but the guy said the russian movie has english subtitle and the british comedy has special features, menu, subtitles etc. but as soon as we got home, the russian movie had no subtitles, the british comedy had no menus, no special features no nothing. so we went back to the shop (the shopkeeper was a woman this time).we told her the problem and said we want to return it and asked for the money back. she wanted to exchange the DVDs but we assume that if both of these DVDs didnt work, wouldnt be worth risking to get another two. so we said we want the money back. we werent even being rude. but she gave us a dirty look and slammed the money at me.

why does she have to give us that attitude? if theres something wrong with the DVD then she should atleast apologize dont you think?!

You were taking money out of her pocket (in her view) and it was a lost sale and therefore lost revenue for her (assuming she was the owner).

Too bad she doesn't realize that if she had only treated your valid complaint with some respect then she would have a better chance of getting you back as repeat customers, as opposed to being juvenile and rude, guaranteeing that not only will you not return that you will probably tell several people you know about your negative experience, causing her even further loss of business.

First - You did say you bought it near BTS station. So.... the stuff you just bought are more than likely PIRATED goods. So- with that in mind - don't expect much - especially for the price.

Second - that is Thailand. DO NOT expect consumer law and customer rights to operate there the way you might expect it in your country.

Third - these people are there to make money - JUST to survive. They deal with lots of foreigners all the time, and generally, they have to put up with many tourists who will try to haggle every baht out of the goods which really is pittance for the tourist but it is substancial for them. You can at least understand some dealers may have an "attitude". (I have seen a tourist try to haggle what is equivalent of less than a dollar!)

Just let it go. I am sure that little episode with the DVD was not your overall of experience of Thailand and its people.

This is a common thing amongst Thai and Thai as well.. except the Thai would know that they are not going to get their $$ back and an exchange would be the best you could hope for - - as stated above - - pirated goods most likely and the seller does not know what is in them, may not even own a dvd - - there is a Thai saying - "What the elephant eats, he does not give back" - if you had bought them in a proper store at the legit price then you would not have had this problem and the service would have been with a smile... you get what you pay for..

If you bought the DVD next to the Sky train station this mean it is a copy - for 100 baht you cannot expect to have everything. Giving the money back in Thailand is a no no as you make them lose face, they rather give you an exchange. Try to go to the same place to buy you DVD and people will remember you and have a big smile on their face next time you come.

I believe you were served by a different person when you bought the DVDs and hence the lady shopkeeper did not know what had transpired previously. So she may not understand the reason why you returned the discs, hence the attitude.

Probably a misunderstanding on both sides. As the others said, let it ride. Mai pen rai and let the issue rest from now.

don't think of this rudely, but frankly no. You're totally overreacting. in thailand shopkeepers are known to have bad attitudes anyway. secondly, you do have the option to test the dvds right then and there. and if they do not work they are MORE THAN HAPPY to exchange them. not really the western way of doing it, but hey that's how it goes.

If you are dealing in black market goods to begin with, you can't expect much. There is a reason it is so cheap.

Dear friend
You went shopping in the wrong country.
And learned how the Thai - people really are!

Thailand - the country of smile! - yes that's true - they smile at tourists as long as they think they can cheat them and earn on it.
