Thanks to the advances of the British Empire, the largest populations on the planet spoke English as their primary language.
After World War II, one of the first actions of the new world body was to establish safe aviation codes for commercial traffic. Because most of the Western world, and the largest populations on the planet as well as the largest plane builder(The United States) all spoke English, English became the international language of the Control Tower.
Because the United States had advanced the science of Medicine the most from 1937 to 1971, English became the secondary language of Math, Science and Medicine after Latin, a dead language in terms of the spoken word.
Despite these advances, a major movement to make Esperanto the Universal language has been in progress for decades. While it's been largely a flop, Spanish rapidly encroaches on the larest language spoken world wide and Esperanto is strongly influenced by Spanish Grammar and verbs.
The final factoid in why English is the Universal language is that more than 1/2 of all of the natural resources on the planet are consumed by the English speaking nation the United States of America. Since English is their primary language, it makes English the primary language of Business and thus Commerce. As Commerce, Aviation, and Science are the primary exchanges between nations, English has become a Universal language.

While English is not the most spoken native language (that would be Spanish followed by Chinese) it is the most spoken SECOND language, making it then the most "universal" language. Throughout the world English is used as the primary language in Business because the US is such a large consumer of goods. As a result, those throughout the world wanting to sell those goods in the US have made English a mandatory requirement.

English is the most use language because of the U.S.A. If we were not the super power of the nation, If another country had been the super power than maybe whatever language they speak would be it. Did you know that the U.S. was only one vote away from German being our primary language?

in 1972 it was changed from French to English, as the most recognized language in the world.
Now, sadly, it looks like it might change to Spanish before long.....
