I would do some extra research on the various model years. The safety is there but the early years of the new Mini did have mechanical and electrical problems. If it has a CVT transmission it will have even more problems. They did get the bugs worked out of the CVT, but I don't remember what year that was. If you want a Mini Cooper I don't recommend going earlier than 2004 or 2005.
I did test drive a 2005 Mini Cooper. It is great fun to drive. :) It's like driving a go-kart.

The Mini Cooper is a solid, fun-to-drive car for a hatchback (mainly because the latest version was designed and built by BMW). It's a very safe car, but still a small car. If you ever got in a wreck with, say, a midsize SUV or a truck, you'd most likely wind up dead no matter how many airbags are in it because it's such a small car.Since you're getting the standard Cooper, and not an Cooper S or a Cooper JCW, then don't plan on winning any drag races. The car will handle well, but it's only got average power. Also, Consumer Reports lists the reliability of that year (I believe that's the year it came out) as being very poor. I'd say go for a newer version, such as a 2004-2006, because the reliability has improved over the 2002-2003 models.

If you need any more information on this, or any other models, please feel free to ask.

eversince mini cooper was introduced in the market this car is perfectly designed from body to suspension & engine. that's why they produce this car every 10 yrs. the 2002 model has a 4 airbags that can assure u of safe impact wrap around its body. it has a larger engine displacement compare to the older model of 1.3L. tires size of 17" makes more grip on the road. so what are u waiting for? go & purchase 1 now!
