Let's go straight to finches.

Finches are a kind of bird. Darwin noted that the beaks of a new variety had a different shape. This shape was better to crack the nuts that the finches ate.

Darwin hyposized that the finches with the best beaks ate better, and could pass on their traits to their successors. Weaker-beaked finches would be at a disadvantage, and less likely to survive to reproduce.

It has only been 150 years since Darwin publized his theory - not many generations. Actual evolution hasn't been observed, due to a lack of time. The fossil record does have examples of evolution.

This is a really crappy example, but the Dodo, for example, once could fly. After they escaped there were no predators preying on them, so, over time they lost the power of flight and grew FAT (maybe). A better example is the fact that most kids mutated and now their thumb is more useful than their index finger. This is the result of playing too much gamecubes, playstations, gameboys, and xboxes.
