I have my heart set on a certain breed, and want a pup to train.

I don't think so, as long as you ensure that the breeder is completely above board (not a backyard breeder) and don't further the overpopulation problem by breeding your puppy (although most reputible breeders only sell "pet" quality dogs and their contracts require that the dog is spayed or neutered).

While I like to think that you'd be able to find a dog you loved just as much at the shelter, if you are set on a certain breed it's certainly your right to get one! Just continue to support the shelter and educate anyone you can about spaying and neutering their pets.

No you're not a hypocrite. I support shelters; however, when I wanted to get a puppy I wanted to get a certain breed from a breeder (miniature pinscher). I try looking at shelters, but everytime I came across a shelter in my area they had an age restriction or prefer people that lived in houses over renters. So I just stuck to breeders.

Somehow I was just looking on petfinder.org for a dog playing around on the site looking at the dogs and I came across the most beautiful miniature pinscher (chocolate) and she had the cutest look. I was shocked @ how she looked (didn't look mix the markings that were of a purebred and her ears were clipped and her tail was docked). I called and realized that this shelter did not have an age restriction (only that you must be 18 and older not 21 or 25 like some close to me). I immediately drove over and adopted her out. To this point she's perfect for me and everyone says how cute she is.

If I didn't adopt her I probably would of bought a min pin from a breeder (I even volunteered @ the humane society when I was younger, I support taking in strays, and helping dogs). My boyfriend's family bought their boxer from a breeder. So you're not a hypocrite. You support shelters and understand and you just know what you want and sometimes you have to go to a breeder. Good Luck.

No, you are not a hypocrite. Breeders often have a health guarantee on their animals. When you adopt from an animal shelter, you don't know what you are getting. My mother adopted a puppy from an animal shelter. He was a great dog (died last year of old age) but he had constant health problems with his ears. It was clear he was from a puppy mill. When you adopt from a breeder, you can see where you are getting your pup from and know that your animal was treated well from birth. However, some breeders are better than others so make sure you ask them a lot of questions.

Look I have worked at shelter as well but I have accually purchased from breeders to get a certain breed. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you are not going to turn into a back yard breeder. Since you work in shelter I am sure you will not. There is nothing wrong with wanting a certain breed!! Hey if you feel really bad look for a rescue for that breed you can alway adopt and puppy from a rescue!! Have you though about that!! Good luck and do not feel bad!

I am the same way. I totally support the animal shelter financially but have bought all of my dogs from breeders because I want a certain breed.

I understand! I support the local shelters here, I actually go to the one every week. However, I am also a breeder.

However, in your situation, you can have the best of both worlds, if you aren't planning to breed your new dog. Check with your state's rescue organization for the breed you want! You can get a great pet, in the breed you want, and save its life!

Good luck!

YES you are being a hypocrite. How are you supporting them if you're not willing to get a dog from one? Donating a little time, a little money...? Would you expect others you advise to adopt than not adopt yourself. Beyond shelters there are rescue groups that are breed and non-breed specific. And there are puppies in shelters and rescue groups as well. If you did your research you would be able to find a rescue group for almost any breed and if you have the patience you could get a puppy if one was not currently available.

Even if you find a reputable not backyard breeder you are still feeding the system of having someone pimp out dogs and create litters of dogs that may go unhomed or end up being surrended to shelters. You cannot vouch that each dog from that breeder will go to a loving forever home.

Plus getting a dog of any age..they can be trained not just puppies.

Of course not!

When you buy from a breeder, you at least have a chance of finding out the temperament by meeting the sire and dame, you have the option of getting the papers for the pup, it's YOUR choice on having the pup "fixed" eventually, and there's a guarantee for health.

No, you aren't a hypocrite. You'd be a hypocrite if you later decided that you don't want the dog and put it in the shelter.

I agree, you are not a hypocrite! It is better to buy a dog that you love and it have a forever home than rescue one that you will not be happy with and possibly give it up some day.
