I had to have a tooth taken out a couple of months ago. The root had broken and the dentist informed me that he had to leave a little bit if root in or he would have to cut all my gum to get it out. The root had had root treatment so is dead. The only thing is i can now feel a little pointy sharp bit at the side of my gum. Is that the root and should i go back? or will it be ok

Bexx,
The root may indeed be working it's way out. It shouldn't cause any serious problems before your next checkup, but if it's bothering you, feel free to call the dentist.

There shouldn't be any additional charge since it is from the previous extraction.

Be sure and go for your checkups every 6 months!

Good luck!

I had an extraction 4 weeks ago - if your not in pain, you don't have an infection or disease like someone wrote! I have a pointy thing too and it's just part of the harder gum, but this may not be your case, if you are concerned, contact your dentist! Good Luck Sweetie.

Hi the sharp pointy thing you can feel may well be the remnants of the nerve or it could be a tiny shard of tooth left behind from the extraction, I would go back and have it looked at, just to be on the safe side, good luck.

sounds similar to what i had once. it was a splinter of the tooth that had broken off.
as it has now pushed its way towards the edge of the gum the dentist should be able to remove it easily. mine was pulled out straight away.
but i wouldn't just leave it in case it gets an infection.

My husband is a dentist and i can asure that you need to take it out especialy if it is dead. It can cause you health problems later on. It is not normal for him to leave it in even if he did have to cut your gums. some dentist just don't want to do more work then they have o.
