When do people stop doing this? I have heard of people, up to age two, saying their child is 17 months or 22 months. Why not say that they are a year and a half or almost two instead?

my daughter will be two in march. most of the time when people ask how old she is i say "she will be two in march." when she was 18 months, i would say a year and a half. if the person then replies, "my child is one also," i would say "mine is 18 months," or what ever. a few months makes a big difference. a 24 month old is a huge difference from a 30 month old, but they are both technically two.some people probably feel the need to be specific. why i don't know. maybe because all the books and magazines we mothers read do it. or because the pediatricians do it as well. or maybe some mothers want everyone to know exactly how old there child is to "prove" that they are normal? i can't see myself really using the "months" thing for much longer.

I think that people should stop counting in months when the child reaches the age of 1. After that, I always feel like I need to take out a calculator.

Generally, parents stop counting in months around 18 months. In medical and other professions, months are used in counting because a few months can make such a difference in progress and abilities. In special education, we have two ages- the chronological age (how old they really are) and the adjusted age (age that they are functioning at, determined by testing their skills). This can get confusing, but it really helps to know that a child you are getting in your class is two years, 6 months, but functioning at a 6-9 month old's level. Many doctors refer to children in months up to 36 months (3 years) as common practice.

I stopped after 12 months...why make yourself go through the work of counting months. I just say, 1 or 1 1/2 or whatever. That is retarded how people do that!

I think it's so you can chart your child's developements. There's a huge difference between an 18 month old and a 24 month old BUT there's also in between stages like 21 months. It's easier to say 21 months than one and 3/4. I think it's a little silly after 2 though.
Your little one's so cute!! Such a sweet little face.

I don't know? But I always thought that was kinda irritating! Why not just say 2, or 3 or 2 1/2????? Why do they say "my son is now 28 months old". I mean come on... Could you imagine us saying our age in months. Well next week I will be 332 months old. lol!

I'll admit i still do it with my son who is not quite 1.5 but where it comes to my 2.5 year old daughter i gave up at 2 because it just got me confused. But i suppose its the same when your talking about weeks instead of 8 weeks why not just say 2 months.

people should only do it up until their childs first birthday. other than that they should stop and just say they are 2 or 2 and a half. it is annoying and i hate when people do that.
