I left a Texas company in 2006 and got some severance pay in 2006 and will get some in 2007. I moved to Virginia after I left my Texas job. Do I need to pay Virginia state income tax on my Texas severance pay in 2006? Do I need to pay in 2007?

I'm not an expert on every state's income tax laws, but usually you have to report all income on your state return, and then you get to deduct out-of-state amounts.

(Texas has no state income tax, so you don't have to worry about them.)

If you received the severance pay while you are resident in Virginia, then yes, you will be subject to Virginia income tax on the severance pay you received while resident in Virginia. There may be a possibility that you could argue that the severance pay you received in 2006 was related to your non-Virginia period and therefore should not be subject to Virginia income tax. The argument would be weaker in 2007.

Yes, of course. Virginia residents must pay income tax also.

All monies received after leaving TX will be taxable in your resident state.
