I hesitate.
Patriotism is dangerously close to nationalism which is never a good thing.
And I don't think patriotism is good if it means sticking by your government no matter what. Because any country can make bad decisions from time to time.
However I HIGHLY admire the ideas put forth in the U.S. Constitution. Though ironically the Constitution itself is very anti-patriotism. It is set up to establish a weak government that can be overthrown if the will of the people goes against it. I think that is an admirable ideal. And of course I love the other tenets of the Constitution such as the Bill of Rights.
I also think America is a beautiful country. There are landmarks, parks, cities, and objects all over this country that are extremely beautiful.
So patriotism for ones country is still strong, but that patriotism does not necessarily cover ones government.

Patriotism was never higher or better, or more visible than it was on 9/11. Actually, in the days following 9/11. The United States had suffered a direct attack from a foreign country. the entire world was on our side. But leave it to the politicians to screw it up. While I oppose the war in Iraq, I still am patriotic. I still remove my hat and place it or my hand over my heart when someone plays the national anthem. My children do the same and we do it proudly. This is respect for our flag, not for our politicians. It is out of respect for those who got us where we are today. I think that the US is still one of the greatest places in the world to live today, and wouldn't trade it. By the way, yes I am a veteran.

Unfortunately, I do think patriotism is a thing of the past. The elites love to laugh at the patriotic among us. I love my country. We're far from perfect, but I don't want to live anywhere else. Besides, people are literally DYING to get into America - how can someone see that and not think we have something worth protecting?

Patriotism is never a thing of the past. There are always people who will support their country. When you say the Pledge of Allegiance you are showing your patriotism. However, there are also many people who would like to make patriotism a dirty word.

Of course patriotism still exists. The problem is people have forgotten that dissent is still patriotism. Too many people have been brainwashed by Bush to think "if you're not with us, you're against us" which is just ignorant. It goes against the very foundation our country is built upon. It's ok in this country to disagree, it's protected by our Bill of Rights. Patriotism can mean different things for different people.

Patriotism is ingrained in Americans. I think it's for both men and women. The Israelis draft their women too.
I served in the Navy for 20 years. The current war won't stop for 2 years unless some horrifying killings of 100s of service men and women in one fell swoop.

Ask yourself two questions and be honest and non partisan. What good patriot in America would invade Iraq after they surrendered?
They had no tanks, no planes and half of the Iraqi army had deserted? Do you think Iraq is a occupation or a "war on terror".
A good patriot does not follow blindly. Many followed Hitler Blindly to their grave. To follow blindly is not being a patriot, it's being sheep led to slaughter.

it's good to love your country, but blind approval and support of your country is just called ignorance.
just like it's good to love your parents, but if your parents are child molesting murderers, it's not so easy, y'know?
i'm sure you get what i'm saying, but what i'm saying is that patriotism only goes so far. i love the USA, and i support the president, even if i dont agree with him, just as i support the troops fighting for me, even if i don't agree with the war.

These days what most people call patriotism is actually nationalism, and there is a huge difference.
