I agree with those who said call the vet it is free and they if you have a good vet are very helpful over the phone and can tell you what it could be and whether or not you should bring him in. Some dogs breathe heavier when they sleep and make that noise when having dreams though if it is happening like this and often then it could be more of a problem as like you said possibly asthma ( some dont think dogs can get it but my dog has hayfever so anythings possible). The vet could also reassure you if he doesn't think it is anything and tell you of things to possibly do at your house for him and if it doesnt get better to bring him in. As well as cooked chicken bones can splinter when they eat them causing a piece to stick in his throat which may or may not be serious.

Everyone is right ... your first step should be just to call the vet and talk to the assistant or the vet if you can. Explain what's happening (and even better, if by some miracle it happens while you are on the phone or can call them when it's happening, let them listen) and just see what they say. The vet's office will help you take the right steps.
Also, it doesn't have to be your vet if you don't know who it is. Look online or in the phone book for a vet close by, or for an "emergency clinic" for pets, their receptionists are very helpful.
Also consider what type of dog you have. If they have a "flat face" like a pug or boston terrior, then this may just happen when they are excited. Like the previous poster said, just hold them and help calm them down, they are just out of breath!

OMG. I'm sorry you're in a that situation with your father. My parents were the same way when we were younger. They wouldn't take our dog to the vet unless it is a life & death situation or for shots.
The first thing I would do, is.. call the vet. Tell them that your father doesn't have the $$ to pay for the vet bills and ask for the vet for some help.
Or, call the animal shelter and ask if there is a local animal hospital for people who cannot afford to go to the vet.
I know it's not a $$ issue. But, you have to say that. I know where you're coming from. My parents were the same way.
Good luck!

Dog balls...the domestic dog's self-worth? Ha! The rattling matters are plastic and the animal will get no improvement from having them in his scrotum. The vet bought you a invoice of items so he would make the most of your lack of know-how. And if it was once your suggestion to have them implanted he will have to have attempted to dissuade you. Dogs (chiefly doggies) don't have any inkling of what occurred within the vet's workplace besides he fell asleep and has a few affliction down through his penis. But he does think much less competitive and now the mutt around the road does not look to be such a lot of a danger to him. Go to him and feature the puppy dealt with for the irritation and swelling, in case you nonetheless believe him. Good success J

This is nothing to worry about unless it is going on for a very long time, or is ending up in other issues such as a seizure, vomiting, etc. All you have to do is pull the dogs head up, so the neck is taught, and rub the throat firmly. It is nothing more than a spasm in the neck muscles. I have two dogs that do it, and have had one in the past that also did. I took him to the vet and after a hefty bill this is what he told me. Just pull the head up, rub the neck, and talk to him to calm him. The muscles will relax and the fit will stop.

Hello,
I am sorry to say your concern I do not know of since I am not a vet nor an expert on these things, but like one of the people said already, it is free to call the vet yourself. And you can proof to your father that there is something wrong. I wish you the best of luck to you and your lovely dog.
With much love,
Karen

The best thing to do is to call the vet yourself and tell them what the problem is. Tell them your dad will not bring the dog in unless he knows there is a probblem. Then your vet can tell you what the problem could be and you can tell your dad.
Good Luck

you need to tell your dad to take him to the vet. i work as a vets assistant, just taking notes on what the vet does(i'm studying to be a vet) and you can tell him that someone with experience told you to get that dog to the vet. if that doesn't work show him these websites.
