I want something small and easy to care for, but still a rugged type dog.

By rugged, what do you mean? Anyway, I have a rat terrior, who's great.

They have short coats, so you don't have to groom them. They barely shed at all. They're extremely loyal, small, and yet still play and like to have fun, generally they don't eat much. An all around good dog. At least ours does. Ours is an indoor dog, but we have some friends who have an outdoor rat terrior, and that one seems to do fine as well. It's a great dog for us. You might want to do some of your own research first before you get a dog though. Here's a website that's supposed to find the right dog for you. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm

Adopt a small dog. Most dogs can be easy to care for...if you mean you don't have the time for grooming, consider a terrier mix. There are so many dogs needing a home, contact a local rescue to see if they have someone that fits with you! They will also be able to assist you with finding the right toys, foods, and all other stuff so that you can maKe your baby very easy to care for!!
Good LUCK and save a life!!!

Everyone is going to suggest the breed of dog they like best but not all dogs are alike and what works for some may not work for you. If you want a dog that you will not be sorry for getting you should research the many different breeds and decide honestly which will fit into your lifestyle.
You can research breeds on akc.org

Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder!

A Chinese Crested, they come in a full coat and hairless (they look like a clydesdale pony) I have one of each. They are the only AKC registered toy that is good with kids. Their bone structure looks elegant and is also sturdy. The full coated does not shed but needs brushed. My avatar is my Hairless Chinese Crested. The hairless sunburn and get cold in the winter time. They are a low energy dog and love to be on your lap. The male is 10 lbs (pictured) and the female is 6 almost 7 lbs.

it depends on where you live. some dogs do better in different environments than others. i have a westy now and actually had one for 13 years but he just recently passed, but they are some of the greatest dogs. they are great with evey one and children. you should really look into them. they are actually called west highland terriers and they are some of the best little dogs in the world.

a BOXER!

He is the clown of the dog fraternity, canines answer to vaudeville. A laugh a minute, lives life to the fullest, a maximum velocity version of canine slapstick. But he is also a sympathetic soul, a shoulder to cry on, a confidante.
