I recently traveled on Southwest Airlines. They allowed me to carry on my purse and my laptop bag. One item had to be stored in the overhead compartment (which you aren't supposed to access while the flight is in session) and one should be stored under the seat during take off and landing but can be used and accessed while in the air.

The laptop is considered a carry on item, but you are allowed to bring your purse as well. Just make sure that you have your makeup in a clear 1 qt. ziploc bag if they are liquid or gel.

You can look on the TSA website http://www.tsa.gov/ they have the complete list of what you can and can not bring on the aircraft with you.

It's considered at Personal Item (in the same catogory as purse). So yes, you can bring the laptop and another item.
