My daughter is five years-old. She is very hyperative, can't sit still sometimes, has a short attention span sometimes, and can't focus sometimes. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a lot of 5 year olds.

First suggestion: have an allergy test done. It could be she's got a food allergy that's making her twitchy.

Second suggestion: if she's very good at something (art, drama, soccer), get her involved. Find an outlet for what she's good at, and see if that helps her calm down.

Third suggestion: find out if anything has changed in her life lately: divorce, new sibling, new teacher, trouble at school...it could be she's scared and acting out to get attention.

Fourth suggestion: if anybody (a professional, not Grandma or the next-door neighbor) has told you they think there's a problem, explore your diagnostic options. Chances are, you won't be able to do a full workup to look for disabilities till she's 6. But if this is the first time you're noticing anything new, don't panic just yet.

Fifth suggestion: if there's a family history of ADD, do some research. Find out from other family members how they dealt with the situation, what resources they used, and what did and didn't work.

Good luck--

That sounds like my daughter. She is very hyper, when you try to teach her something for to long she will get very aggitated and start doing something else. I think that this is normal. If she's in school and doesn't have any trouble then I wouldn't worry about it. If she's in school or daycare or wahtever talk to her teacher or the daycare worker and ask them how she acts when she's there. My daughter is in school and she acts fine when she;s there but when she's home it's a different story. I think that it's just because when they are home they know that they can get away with more than what they can anywhere else. Don't worry about it. She will grow out of it eventually or if you notice any more problems then take her to the dr. your her mom you do what you think is best.

I don't think she does! My daughter is 4 years old and she acts the same way. I just wanna scream at times. She talks too much and just can't sit still. She always wants to go, so no I don't think so and under no circumstances do you allow doctors to put your child on medication. She's just being a child. That stuff makes children worse and droopy and abnormal.

It is not uncommon for young children to have short attention spans. Are you controlling your childs "sugar intake" Sugar is an energy food and will cause your child to be more hyper than normal. Hopefully with age which is the case for most children, she will outgrow these things.

I had a set of twin boys who are A.D.D.If she sleeps alright & she has anormal appitite then chances are she is a normal 5-year-old.My Boys slept 3 hours then were up the rest of the night. And they would eat everything in site day & night just to keep up with their energy level. They never gained an ounce either. If you still have doubts:then ask your Doctor to evaluate her...Good Luck...P.S...My Boys are 30 yrs old now so don't worry too much. They all grow up sooner or later...

This is why 5 yr old are reguarded as preschoolers
notice the (pre). it means she is not developed enough for school.
energy is very normal for kids
short attention spans and everything.
this is why there are playgrounds. stop feeding her junk, sweets, and anything non food..start directing the type of activity, who knows maybe she will be the next world winning tennis player.or stunt woman or something. no non foods. These things can make the brain wired. candy, additives, food colorings,preservatives,etc....

Sounds normal to me but I am no doctor. You know, I don't think ADD is an actual problem/illness. I think people just can't handle children anymore because of the whole no-spanking ideology nowadays so they came up with this "illness" to label children when really they should be looking at themselves and their shortcomings. I'm not saying you're a bad mother than can't control her daugher by no means. I just think we shouldn't label children or worry about what could be wrong with them. We should just appreciate their personalities!!!

Don't label her with ADD. My doctor tried that and i quickly changed doctors. He was just a hyperactive child. Try a behavioral modification class. We went to the R.I.P. ( regional intervention Program) and my son learned to control himself. They are taught that they must do what they are told to get what they want. For example: during snack time they had to stay in their seat. If they got up the food went in the trash. The program is great. Maybe you have something like that in your area. I know it's a nationwide program and it's free. Try this website : http://www.ripnetwork.org/
