I was severly abused as a small child?
What merit is there in helping entities (people) who I don't think of as sentient?

Helping others helps takes the focus off ourselves. Instead of feeling sorry for ourselves, we have to tune into another person's drama and help them. It also helps put our own pain in perspective... you are not the only one who has had to deal with seriously bad stuff in your life.

I think, too, by learning and understanding about others, it helps our own self-learning and growth too.

Re your last statement, do you think people in need are incapable of feeling? Why would you think that? What's their ability to feel got to do with your own abuse or their need for assistance?

I hope you're getting some help yourself to deal with the baggage you're carrying around.

It is always good to help other people. Maybe getting out will help you forgive and move past what happened.
