This is for the same reason they get those nice trucks and cars... They are componsating for what they lack either physically(most common) or mentally.

The majority do it for torque and better performance. That is except the little rice mobiles. They just do it for the look and the noise. There is no big benefit for them unless they are tuners who modify the engine too. I'm in Michigan and have done custom exhaust for over 35 years now and it's still a big business.

Why? They sound good do not break any decible laws and in some cases get better effecency ratings out of your engines. Take less Gasoline and are cool.
An ego booster, self esteem, wanting to act like an individual, wanting to join the group, and it is their buisness not yours. You don't like te sound, well they may not like the sound of yur music, or your whining voice but it is yours and as long as you don't yell offensively and play your music to break the legal decible level so what.
You want a democracy or some bureaucrat who just agrees with your personal likes and dislikes and to hell with what everyone else thinks then join the Democrat or Republican partys!
Ever hear of personal choice!

While sound can be a factor, the aim isn't to get a louder sound most of the time.
An aftermaket exhaust can increase power and help overall fuel economy.

They do it for attention have you ever noticed a great looking car and you tell everyone around you to look at it and they miss seeing it because it has already passed. The guys with loud mufflers never miss getting their car seen because when people hear it they all look to see what it can do.

they dont just sound cool. they also free up the exhaust making the engine work less. this gives you more power and in turn better fuel economy, if they can keep the pedal off the floor :)

an exhaust system with less restriction uses less fuel and is more efficient.this usually isn't the reason for the change though.

whatever happened to the attitude live and let live? I don't like whiny people who complain about everything (ie: you) but I'm not trying to pass legislation to ban them.
Get over it and relax a little bit. whiner
