The Model T. Its low cost made a car culture possible and its reliability made it desireable.
Then again, that makes it the worst too because of the consumption of oil and damage to the environment....
"You can have any colour you like, as long as it's black."
- Henry Ford (All Model Ts were painted black to save on production costs.)

As this is in the Autoracing catagory, I will guess we are talking about race cars. Certainly a few contenders:
1) Porsche 917/30 - a car that could be on this list just for the way it dominated over it's competition in 1973. But added to the fact that it retains many speed records so long after, and that many of the technologies on this car were cutting edge for long after. It has to be considered.
2) Any of the turbo Mclaren Hondas - either in the hands of Prost or Senna, these cars dominated much as the previously mentioned Porsche did. They were completely above the competition.
And many other runner ups for this list, be it some of the Schumacher driven Ferraris, or the technical wonders of the mid-90s Williams! But in the end, my vote for best car all time is pretty clear:
Porsche 956/962 - this car would finish first, second, and third overall in it's first real outting at Le Mans in 1982. It would win another 6 times... the last time 12 years later! A remarkable period for a car to not only be comptetitve, but to win. It owns the fastest time around the Nurburgring. And that's just the tip of the iceberg of this car's successes. Blinding speed, reliability and endurance, and longevity add up to make it my choice.

I agree with MC Hummer. The Ford Model T was truly the world's greatest car. They were inexpensive, durable and easy to fix. There were kits available to convert the Model T to a farm tractor, a snowmobile or to be hooked up as a power source to generate electricity or to run a saw mill, irrigation pump or machine shop. The Model T could be found all over the world, especially in poorer countries, being used for things other than transportation. Stripped down Model T's were used on the early race tracks.

Maclaren driven by Senna, Torana driven by Peter Brock.
PS for all of the american respondents-you have realy missed out on some fantastic racecars over the years. Holden brought back the 1970's era Camaro a while back and it sold like hot cakes in America (under some other name) but we have been playing with that muscle car for decades. The Torana was the ultimate drive (I had one!).

The Ford GT40. It is the only car that still looks like a new design, even after nearly 40 years. Le Mans winner and if you have ever seen one in the flesh - simply awesome!

Jaguar XKE - not the most dependable, nor the fastest, but put a smile on your face every time and the body style was absolutely fabulous - bet they could take an early 60's XKE, manufacture it today and it would still sell like hotcakes! Beautiful, just beautiful.......
