Well, I was looking online, and I found that I have some of the symptoms of depression. And I've been feeling sort of sick lately, but my grandma says she doesn't know what's causing it. I don't really want to tell her I think it might be depression, because maybe I'm just paranoid. What do I do?

I've only noticed anything in the past 2 days... and I did have a traumatic experience, but that was over 7 months ago. I never really paid attention to eating habits, which is wrong, but still the same. I haven't been able to sleep the past few days and I've stayed home from school, for a variety of reasons. I don't know. By the way, I am 14 years old, if that's any help...

some of first s/s of depression are, change in eating and/or sleeping habits, lack of interest in normal things you care for, feeling of being blue, or down or not wanting to be alone, best to go to your GP and let him know how you feel, he has to keep your confidentiallity and he will decide if depression is temporary or a more serious type, some things are hereditary and you need meds for a balance and some things are temporary and will dissapate with time, only a professional can know the difference, talking and any support group you have is always good too.

well you didn't state in your question how old you are, but I'm guessing you are fairly young, so firstly its great that you have researched it and are looking for help because so many people think if they forget about it it will go away and that's the worst thing you can do. Have a think if there are any family members, friends or teachers/work colleagues you can confide in. Also if you visit your local GP and explain your situation I'm sure they will be able to offer support confidentially. Personally though i think, as hard as it may seem to be, the best thing you can do is talk to your parents. if you are suffering from depression it will take a long time to treat and it will be easier on everyone if you let them know. Don't feel its something to be ashamed of or that you have failed in some way (self blame is very common in depression) because you'd be amazed at just how many people suffer from depression. i wish you all the best of luck but I'm sure you'll be just fine ; )

Can you get out of bed in the morning? I don't mean do you hit snooze cuz you are tired. I mean, you just don't want to get out of bed and face the day...

Has there been a traumatic experience in your life that would reasonably make you depressed for a while?

There is normal, situational depression, which just takes time to get over and then there is clinical depression that requires treatment.

If you can get out of bed and can function throughout the day, you are probably fine.

If you are unsure, see a counselor. If you are in school, see if there is a counselor there. If you are employed, see if you have some sort of Employee Assistance program that includes counseling. Your employer never finds out why you went. You get to talk to a counselor for free. And they can help you determine if you are just dealing with a hard time in life, or if it's a chemical imbalance in need of treatment.

with depression, you'll feel sad, things that you once loved wont catch your interest anymore, some days you wont even want to get up out of bed. i've even heard the saying "anger is depression turned inside out". if you are just feeling sick all the time, mabye you just really are sick....you'd know if you were depressed, you just wouldnt be yourself. hang in there, you would know if there was really something wrong, and wouldnt have to search the internet for answers.

go to your family doctor and explained to him how you are feeling. Do you cry all of the time...are you lacking energy? Do you get headaches for no reason? You know your own body and if you feel like something is wrong and it is depression..it is easily cured with medications and your doctor will help you.
Good luck....
