What sort of gap would you think I should leave on either side of my runner? It's about 1 m wide

if your stairs is 1m then you need to allow 3/4 proportion of carpet to stair so i would allow 125mm either side of the runner and purchase a 750mm runner. hope this helps.

About 7 inches either side. If your stairs go round a corner it gets really complicated to fit and very expensive. I would recommend stair rods too. We didn't to start with and the carpet came loose in a couple of places.

Bout half a foot either side?! My mum just had a runner laid in her hall/stairs and it's really lovely!
