My cat scratches only on staircase - along top edges of stairs primarily, and sometimes on riser.

You may want to consider commercial grade carpeting on the steps. It is a high traffic area anyway. Commercial will stand up to heavy use longer than residential grade.
It generally has a shorter tuft so the cat is less likely to create a run.
Ask at the carpet department or carpet store to be shown some commercial grade carpeting.

Get the cat declawed. February is national pet nutering month. Perhaps the vet has a special on declawing too. You will have to call around to different vets to find out.

None, but love your cat and your new carpet in whatever condition it ends up after a few months.

It'd be cheaper to get your cat de-clawed.
Lot less stress, too.

you definately don't want Berber (looped). try frieze (shag look) or just a textured plush(regular look)
