go to the front desk and ask them how many laps equate to one mile. Generally outdoor highschool tracks are 1/4 mile or 400 meters (4 laps for 1 mile). My gym is a 1/10 mile loop that circles around the gym.

You'd need to measure your route (NOT the outer perimeter of the room; even walking along the edge of the wall would 'cheat' a little on each corner).

If your gym is an athletics stadium, then it's four laps. Each lap is 400 metres, or 440 yards, making 1600 metres. (This is adjusted for 'mile' events, which use 1500 metres).

The main problem with a gym is that you would always be turning corners and dodging round other gym users, so your actual workout would be more versatile than ordinary walking, but a lot less consistant. Your stride length would vary a lot.

I think that's why they invented treadmills, but they're not for everybody; perhaps one that moves around like a motion simulator might be an improvement.

1) Determine the average length of your stride. Walk normally and measure the total length of ten strides. Divide by ten for the average length. Say the answer, for example, is 2 1/2 feet.

2) Walk one lap around the gym, counting the number of strides. Say, for example, it is 530 strides. Multiply that by 2 1/2 which equals 1,325 ft. for the distance around the gym.

3) Divide 5,280 (the feet in one mile) by 1,325, which equals 4.0, the number of laps around the gym to equal one mile.

It depends on how big the gym is. Its four laps around my sons whole field so it would be quite a few more if the gym is small. Get a pedometer, it'll tell you exactly how far you walk.
