I'm not sure if I understand the situation.
Potential Situation A: Person A didn't say anything bad about you, but Person B tells you that Person A said something bad about you.
Reaction: "That's funny; I've never known her to gossip."
Potential Situation B: Person B told you that Person A said something bad about you, and Person A said something bad about you.
Reaction: "I'm sorry to hear that."
Then forgive Person A and move on with your life.

Personally, I don't play into what other people say about me unless it can be fought on a legal basis. If it doesn't cross legal boundaries, then it isn't worth worrying about!!!
