I have several parakeets who have been living very happily together (I thought) until yesterday when I got home and found one of the older females pecked to death ... lately I've heard quiet a bit of squawking coming from their room so perhaps the others have been ganging up on her .. Can you tell me why? She appeared healthy.

Any time birds see weakness in another of their flock, they will get rid of it.

You usually see this happen when the older one is sick.

Its a natural behavior in birds in a flock setting whether wild or captive.

Its an instinct. When the flock (your parakeets) saw that your older parakeet was sick they will drive him out of the flock, so the healthier birds can avoid being eaten by a predator while the sick or dying bird gets eaten.

I've seen this happen in anykind of birds, when 1 starts aggravating another 1 the others seem to want to join in. I raise tame doves and the males are really bad about killing other males even male babies.
